Sound and Glory: The Incredible Story of Bill Haley, the Father of Rock 'N' Roll and the Music That Shook the World
Published in Paperback by Dyne-Amer Pubns (June, 1991)
Authors: John W. Haley and John Von Hoelle
Average review score:

Bill Haley.....Rockabilly 's Firstborn of many bretheren
It seems that every rockabilly/R&B and rock & roll artist from the mid-50's has laid claim to "inventing" rock & roll, yet upon examining the historical record via recordings (eg: early demos, as well as pre-fame obscure label recordings) only one name stands in the gap as legitimately qualifying for the title of "inventor of Rock & Roll" and that would have to be Bill Haley, a white country singer from Boothwyn, PA, whose early 50's experiments with adding R&B/jump blues and swing to his nightclub appearances with his band "The Saddlemen" resulted in a new vibe in music that took hold like wildfire, first in Philadelphia, and upon getting the music out on the radio, the rest of the world. They called the new music "Cowboy Jive", for lack of a better name! The name "Rock & Roll" supposedly was coined by Cleveland, Ohio disc jockey Alan Freed who frequently played Haley & The Comets' recording of "Rock A Beatin' Boogie" where the phrase turns up in the lyrics of the chorus. A direct connection to "Cowboy Jive" if ever there was one! The book "Sound & Glory" is an intimate, detailed story of Bill Haley's rise in the late 40's and early 50's and the evolution of his band "The Saddlemen" into the "Comets" from the small country music combo into a small rockabilly combo, and on to a 6 and 7 piece full-blown rock & roll band with sax and piano along with steel guitar. The stories in the book are first-person interviews with the original band members, and many of the other people around him from his early radio days through the ups and downs of his later career. The extremely rare photos the book is filled with alone, are worth the price; most of them being from Jack Haley's family collection, and have never before been seen in print. Haley was also the first rock & roll artist to tour overseas (something Elvis never did), which he continued all the way up till the end of his career. Another TREMENDOUS plus is an exhaustive Haley discography meticulously compiled by the late Herbert Kamitz, an Austrian Haley scholar. "Sound And Glory" belongs in the library of every serious afficianado of rock/pop and rockabilly music.

Where it all started
Anyone who is interested in rock 'n' roll and its history, should buy a copy of this book. This book pretty much tells how the first rock 'n' roll band got started. Even surprises like the FBI trying to find dirt on Haley, because Hoover was a racist and didn't want blacks to mingle with whites during concerts. One concert Haley made them remove a rope that was segregating crowds. This is only one of many things I found interesting in this book. No doubt Elvis was the king, but as you read this book, you will understand why Haley is the true founding father of rock 'n' roll! - there are two books out about Haley, and both are very good, but this one goes a little deeper.

Southern Sierra Rock Climbing : Sequoia/Kings Canyon
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (October, 1999)
Author: Greg Vernon

Awesome Guide with great pictures
Great guide that includes tollhouse, squarenail, courtright, kings canyon, seqouia and all of the crags around this area. Very indepth and keeps up on the new routes.

Exactly what a guidebook should be
This is a very useful guidebook. It contains route photos, clear and detailed topos, and some verbal descriptions. Driving directions to climbing areas, first ascents and other information are also included. Both well-known and less-visited areas are described in detail. I used this book on a recent trip to Courtwright Reservoir and found it extremely helpful. The best aspect is probably the combination of easily understandable topos and photos of the routes -- many guidebooks only have one or the other.

Spice Girl: Giving You Everything

If you like the Spice Girls you have to read this
It was not very up to date but other than that it was a good book.

If you like the Spice Girls (like me) you should read this!
This book is FULL, I mean FULL of pictures of the girls. This book isn't bursting with information, but it has millions of full-color pictures with captions. I love it! The reason I gave it a 9, is because it doesn't have that much information.

Staind: Break the Cycle
Published in Paperback by Warner Brothers Publications (February, 2002)
Author: Staind
Average review score:

Staind is an awesome band!
I highly recomend this book to everyone. Staind's lyrics often refer to challenges most of us must face sometime in our lives. I wont try to describe Staind because they are the only ones who have the right to do this, but I will say that their music has comforted me and helped me through some tough times. Staind's frontman Aaron Lewis is a brilliant lyricist who can right about his many obstacles he has overcome without sounding like another depressed songwriter. In all Staind's book is great for anyone not just their fans.

Staind is awesome!
This book is definitely worth reading if your a fan of Staind. Staind is one of the best new bands out there. The lyrics of their songs often refer to things we all must deal with sometime in our lives. Aaron lewis,is a brilliant songwriter who can give listeners comfort in knowing that their not alone in the way they feel without sounding like another depressed lyricist.I highly recomend this book and all other Staind books and music.

Stallions at Burnt Rock
Published in Paperback by Fleming H Revell Co (February, 2003)
Author: Paul Bagdon
Average review score:

Very good western
Lee Morgan is an oddity among women. She is no Southern Belle, but a horse rancher, tough and strong as any man. Determined to prove her capability, she agrees to race her stallion against a neighbor's, despite her misgivings about the wisdom of gambling and horse racing.

The races have brought danger and a low element to Burnt Rock, making Marshall Ben Flood's life harder. It also endangers both him and Lee. The wildness evolves into murder. It is too late to stop the race though, and it will take every resource in Lee to win it. Faith and courage are key elements to proving herself.

***** This innocent novel will appeal to fans of Louis L'Amour and Zane Grey. It shows that faith can carry into every aspect of life, even those not traditionally thought of as requiring it. Both parents and children can share this book as a family read.

Stallions at Burnt Rock
This was an excellent western novel. The author wove an interesting fictional story with accurate horse information and christian values.

Standing Up to the Rock
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Nebraska Pr (June, 2003)
Authors: T. Louise Freeman-Toole and Louise Freeman-Toole
Average review score:

Regional Appeal
This book will be of interest to natives of the Northwest, as an outsider assesses what it is about their culture that is worth embracing. It will be interesting to city folk to watch one of their own forsake the freeways and the smog of California for a green and peaceful place. During her ten-year indoctrination into the ways of the West, Freeman-Toole faces physical and emotional hardships with heroism and common sense. A first book by the author.

Moving, honest, well written book
Many of the current books written about the West are by natives of the area that have typically lived on a family farm or ranch. They provide intimate details about working the land and lament the daily changes occurring in what many consider the last, best place to live in the United States.
Freemna-Toole is different. She is a sixth-generation Californian and comes to the last free-flowing stretch of the Snake River in Idaho not knowing the impact it would have on her life.
In lyrical, poignant prose she provides an intimate portrait into her search for her own place in the world. It has a profound effect on her life when she finds it in the new, and old, West. Little did she know that her friendship with the owner of the last homestead ranch on the middle Snake River would lead her to encounter the dilemmas facing both natives and newcomers alike in the West.
Her account of having to re-examine her views on environmentalism in light of rural traditions and values is worthy not only for its sensitivity but for its examination of an issue that is at the heart of one of the monunmental changes taking place in the West.
The unavoidable impact of tourism and recreation growth in a pristime and spectacular landscape is noted along with a recognition that is rarely seen in print from a lover of the area, namely that it may be than such tourism will serve to preserve some of the landscape that otherwise might be sacrificed on the altar of economic development.
I heard such an argument made by river guides on a recent trip down the Grand Canyon. They argued that while increased tourism unquestionably places great stresses on the environment, the same tourists, once exposed to such grandeur, are more likely to oppose proposals to develop, dam or clear cut such treasures. Thus, tourists may be the lesser of evils and easier to contain than the alternatives.
There are also chapters on the author's struggle between leaving her family roots in Los Angeles, with all the guilt and uncertainty that predictably creates, and struggling to understand the almost magical pull of the rural West. She writes about her introduction to traditions and a culture that view private property rights, politics, animal treatment, family loyalties and death in a manner that is radically different than the ones with which she is familiar.
Throughout the book are wonderful scenes and descriptions of her young son's introduction to a rural environment and the impact it has on his life.
The book is an excellent memoir about one woman's journey into an enviroment that is harsh, controversial, spectacular and, for an increasing number of people, the end of a long search for a special place that is as much about spirit as geography. A moving, honest, well-written book.

Stone Cats
Published in Hardcover by Weatherhill (August, 1993)
Author: Yoshimi Nagata

Fabulous Cats
I wish it were possible to convey how much enjoyment this little book of cats painted on river rocks has given me. I have even tried painting a few cats of my own. What sheer delight! Thank you, Mr. Nagata, for all the pleasure you have given me.

Exquisite color photos of handpainted stone cats.
This is a short book, only 46 pages, but is packed with excellent color photos of stone cats created by artist Nagata Yoshimi. The cats are actually river stones that have been painted to look like cats. The photos are just as beautiful as the cats themselves, showing everything from a rock concert (cat playing to other stone cats), cats hiding in the leaves, a white cat nestled amid flowering clover, dozing cats, and lots of other delightful photos. At the end of the book is a step-by-step tutorial, showing you how to make your own stone cats

Stone Girl, Bone Girl: The Story of Mary Anning

Authors: Laurence Anholt and Sheila Moxley
Average review score:

Superb!
There are a few picture books out about Mary Anning! All of them are good, but this is THE ONE to read to younger kids! The illustrations are vibrant and colorful. The story is punchy and fun! Kids will be amazed by the story of a young girl who gets struck by lightning as an infant, survives, and as a child finds the fossil of one of the world's largest dinosaurs! It's all true! There's even a dog companion! Buy it and read it to your kids, they won't soon forget it!

The most moving children's book I've read in ten years
I can't remember a more beautifully written children's book since my children were born. The way the story was told was so simple and yet so powerful, I have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone with children. I read it to my 3 and 5 year old girls and they ask for it every night. Simply beautiful.

A great story with relevant and accurate science
A unique perspective that uses science and social principles to illustrate and set up a real world problem for the reader and Adam to solve. Highly accurate geologic illustrations add depth to the story. I've made great tie-ins to real world problems from this book.

A Fantastic Children's Book
I think this is the best children's book available. I love the story and the great plot that children can learn from. Truly an exceptional book for children. Adam is a fascinating character and a deep one for children to relate to. Absolutely a must read.for your young child.
